Small sites,
well kept.

A practical handbook for people who maintain modest web projects and would rather understand their tools than collect more of them.

A useful maintenance routine

A routine should be easy enough to repeat and specific enough to catch trouble early. Start with the visible experience, then work inward.

Rule of thumb: if a check cannot explain what action follows a failure, it is probably only producing noise.
  1. Observe the public page.
Check the same route and connection a visitor would use.
  2. Read the recent changes.
Look for a simple cause before imagining a complex one.
  3. Make one measured correction.
Keep the previous working state available until the result is clear.

An editorial note

Plainstack is an independent collection of working notes. Examples are deliberately small, vendor-neutral, and written to age slowly.
